解説
ホジスンの小説作品を網羅した、初の本格的小説選集。重要な一部の初期稿や著作権を主張するためのコピーライトバージョン、さらにはホジスンの作品かどうかは疑わしい作品に至るまでが網羅されている、なかなか充実した選集だが、彼が小説と同じくらい力を入れて書きためていた詩やエッセイ、ノンフィクションなどは収録されていないため、全集とは言いがたいのは惜しまれる。
この選集は、第四巻までは比較的順調に刊行されていたが、最もマニアックな内容の第五巻が出るまでには随分と時間がかかり、一時は頓挫したかとも思われたものの、2009年に無事刊行され、完結した。なお、第五巻に収録されている「The
Thing in the Weeds」の初期稿「An Adventure of the Deep Waters 」は、版元のミスで最後の部分が切れてしまっているため、正しいものがサイト上からダウンロードできるようになっている。
